I am very excited to announce the opening of a show I curated for the South Asia Institute. Please join us for the public opening of “Shelly Jyoti- Indigo: The Blue Gold” on Saturday, July 22, at South Asia Institute from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm 1925 S. Michigan Ave. Chicago, IL 60616

Through the exhibition, Shelly Jyoti, an acclaimed visual and textile artist from India, attempts to explore indigo’s colonial history and its impact on several nations. In her artistic creations, Shelly depicts the forced cultivation, the exploitative tradition, and the indentured servitude that happened because of one plant — indigo.

The exhibition features new artworks and a selection of Jyoti’s installations, poetry, drawing, fashion, and textiles from the past decade, including her signature “Indigo Narratives” series, which traveled extensively across the US and India from 2009–2018.

Curated by Laura Kina, the exhibit will be on display at the South Asia Institute (SAI) from July 22 to December 16, 2023.

Join us at our opening reception and enjoy Shelly’s thought-provoking and detailed works.
