Laura Kina’s 2022 painting “Over the Rainbow, One More Time” is featured on the cover of the Winter 2023 issue of Feminist Formations. Editor Patti Duncan writes about the work in the journal introduction “On Archives, Memory, and Loss“:

The art on the cover of this issue resonates with the dossier. We are happy to showcase Laura Kina’s 2023 painting, “Over the Rainbow, One More Time (or Sickbed),” which, in her words, “is about starting over. It’s about grief and life in the after.” Kina is a Vincent de Paul Professor in the Art School at Depaul University, and describes herself as a queer, mixed-race Okinawan artist-scholar based in Chicago. Many of her paintings focus on Okinawan diasporic identity and mixed race experience. In “Over the Rainbow, One More Time” she engages illness politics, as well as the complex process of healing. She explains that it was created during the pandemic “in the wake of surviving breast cancer, coming out, and divorce.” In the image, we see from the vantage point of the artist lying in bed, looking down at their own legs and feet, and at the bed, the wall, and a view out the window of a setting sun and building in the distance. The colors include shades of pink, red, violet, and blue. The colors run together down the wall, with tinges of gray and black. The mood is melancholy, suggestive of sickness, sadness, exhaustion…
