Teaching Philosophy: As a visual artist, Kina’s research is firmly grounded within the discipline of painting and contemporary art. The interdisciplinary fields of Cultural Studies and Asian American Studies deeply influence her research and creative activities. She has been involved with the Asian American arts community on the local and national level for the past 20 years, both as a producer of visual artwork and as a community organizer and curator. Since 2002, she has also been involved in the emerging field of critical mixed race studies. These research interests and community connections follow her into the classroom. Her teaching is informed by being both a scholar and an individual invested in community activism.

Laura Kina is Associate Professor of Art, Media, and Design, Global Asian Studies affiliated faculty member, and a distinguished Vincent de Paul Professor at DePaul University in Chicago, IL.

She teaches fine arts and foundations studio art courses (painting, drawing, 2D foundations, and color theory) as well as lecture/seminar courses such as “Asian American Arts & Culture” and “Mixed Race Art & Identity.”
